WHAT IS THE CRICUT JOY?

Cricut Joy is a small (and cute!) cutting machine perfect for crafting in small spaces like an office, your kitchen or even coffee table. It’s light-weight and portable, but don’t be deceived by it’s small size. The Cricut Joy can cut over 50 different materials!

To be perfectly honest when I heard about the newest machine I didn’t really get it. I didn’t understand why Cricut would want a smaller machine. I love my Cricut Maker and Cricut Explore Air 2 and all their capabilities. But when I saw this tiny Cricut Joy in person at the Cricut event I was really impressed! The Cricut Joy is a perfect machine for quick projects, easy to transport places, and great for crafting beginners.  The Cricut Joy is also great for crafting pros who don’t want to necessarily break out their larger cutting machine for a quick project.

WHAT NEW FEATURES DOES THE CRICUT JOY HAVE?

Along with the Cricut Joy, Cricut also launched Smart Materials. These are thicker backed materials so guess what? You can cut without a mat! Yippee!  The new Smart Materials include Smart Iron-on and Smart Vinyl.

Another awesome Cricut Joy material they released is Adhesive-Backed Deluxe Paper. This paper is perfect for making little sticker embellishments or any paper project where you don’t want to mess around with glue! Those cute images above are all sticky on the back and ready to be applied!

The other new Cricut Joy feature that I think is pretty nifty is the new card mat. Cricut released new card kits for the Cricut Joy that include the inserts and envelopes so card making is quicker and easier than ever before. I’ll admit I’m not a huge card-making person, but I loved watching how easy it was to make really cute cards and now I’m excited to try some of the new card kits with the Cricut Joy machine.

Another cool and new Cricut Joy feature? The Cricut Joy also can cut one image up to 4 inches wide and 4 feet long or repeated cuts up to 20 feet long! Wow!

I also am so excited about the new Smart Label Writable Vinyl for the Cricut Joy that is ideal for organizing! The labels were so shiny and nice and the pens don’t smear! It was really cool to see and feel these labels. They are really nice!

CAN I USE MY PENS AND BLADES FROM MY CRICUT MAKER OR CRICUT EXPLORE MACHINE WITH THE CRICUT JOY?

This was one of the first things I wondered about and the answer, unfortunately, is no. The Cricut Joy uses a different blade and housing and different pens. This is a big bummer to me, because I would love if the Cricut Joy could use blades and pens I already have!

WHEN CAN I BUY THE CRICUT JOY AND HOW MUCH IS IT?

The Cricut Joy will be available for purchase on March 1st 2020! You can buy it on Cricut.com or at craft retail stores. The retail price for the Cricut Joy is $179.99.

  1. You’re the only person who has properly explained what the Cricut Joy does. You even provided all the pros and cons. Thank you so much.

I’m not sure if I will be grabbing a another machine, though, since I have four cutters already. The Maker was – IMHO – the only one that ever made me rush out to grab one, and made me wanna spend my last dollar to buying up all of its non-compatable accessories.

It’s still my go-to machine — even though it’s not perfect, either.

Thanks for your awesome post. Glad I came across it.

  2. Hi, I want to purchase a Cricut, the Cricut Explore is currently on sale for $179.99 and the Cricut Joy is the same price. I am wondering which one I should buy. Space is a factor but not the deciding factor in choosing. Can you give me any advice, the pros and cons? Thank you!

    1. Hi, sorry this may be too late. I would probably go with the Cricut Explore because it allows you to do wider cuts and more materials. The Cricut Joy is a great machine, and super compact, but its cuts are limited.

  3. Can I use regular card stock to make cake toppers? I supposed as long as it’s either 4” wide? I can’t decide between buying an explorer or the joy. I’m only looking to make cake toppers labels. Small things….

    Thanks!

    1. Yes, you can use regular cardstock with the Joy. I would say to get an Explore Air 2 because there are more options with it and the price point is the same. The Joy is the better option if you want a small compact machine that takes up less space and is much more portable.

  4. Does it drive anyone else nuts when people say Explorer instead of Explore. I mean come on people this isn’t a Ford. Sorry been needing to say this, I see it constantly and it drives me crazy.

  5. Thank you for explaining the Cricut Joy. I’ve been looking at it for awhile as I’m wanting to make my own cake toppers but didn’t want a large machine. I’ll definitely be getting a Joy now 😊
