DIY FARMHOUSE STYLE WOOD SIGN CUT WITH CRICUT MAKER KNIFE BLADE

This interchangeable farmhouse truck sign is great for fall and winter! Simply switch out the pumpkin for a tree and you’re ready for the next season. I cut the cute basswood truck with the Cricut Maker and Cricut Knife Blade.

If you love this post, then make sure to check out the other interchangeable sign I made using basswood HERE plus all my tips for using the Cricut Knife Blade for cutting out wood.

I was so excited to try cutting basswood with my Cricut Maker and Knife Blade and it did not disappoint! I found the basswood at my local JOANN store and it cut perfectly! I also made the framed blank sign and have included those instructions. If you don’t have access to wood working tools you can always buy a blank sign at a craft store. I bought the supplies for the sign at my local hardware store.

Supplies:
1/4″X2-ftX4-ft birch plywood cut into a 12″X19″ board (I used my table saw to do this)
1X2 cut into two 19″ pieces and two 10.5″ pieces ( I used a chop saw to do this)
Titebond Wood Glue 4 oz
White paint
Paint roller
Wood Clamps
Wood stain (I used Minwax Honey)

Instructions:

Use a table saw to cut up the birch plywood into the specified measurements.

I was able to get four 12X19 signs plus two little ones from one sheet.

Paint your signs with white paint and stain your frame pieces. Allow to dry.

Glue your frame around the edges with the wood glue and use the wood clamps for at least 30 minutes. Longer is better.

Cricut Maker Instructions:

Make sure to slide your guides over to the right so they won’t leave an imprint in your wood. This is a very important step!

Slide over guides before cutting basswood with knife blade.

Open the Design Space file HERE. The basswood I used was 4 inches wide. I placed two of them on my mat at the same time. In the mat preview screen I made sure nothing was in between the two pieces by moving them around. Simply click and drag pieces to rearrange.

Securely place your basswood on the StrongGrip mat, and tape around the edges.

Click on Make It. Select Basswood from the materials list and make sure your Knife Blade is inserted.

I keep an eye on my machine while it’s cutting but I also do other things while it cuts. It takes about 25 minutes for the first mat of this design and 10 minutes for the second (pumpkin and tree)

Carefully remove the tape and remove the pieces you have cut out.

Stain your wood with your rag and stain. I used two different stains to get a variation of color (Honey & Dark Walnut).

Stain basswood

Lightly dip your paintbrush in the white paint, and wipe off excess paint. Brush over the wood to distress. Wipe off any excess with your rag.

Brushing stained wood with white dry brush

Mix your grey paint with water (50/50) and then paint over your pieces. Remove excess with the rag. (These steps are optional but I wanted to create a weathered wood look for the farmhouse style.)

Glue your sign with wood glue. Make sure to only place glue on the bottom of the rack that goes on the truck. You want the top left open to place your tree and pumpkin. Place a flat board on top and weights. Allow to dry.

Glue basswood to sign with wood glue.

Now you can place your pumpkin or your tree in the back of the truck depending on the season!

  1. Good my mother in law is trying to make your famr truck cut out with her new cricut maker. My question is how did you make the up rights wider on the wood rack thats on the back of the truck. Hers are so thin when the cutter tries to cut them they are breaking.

    1. Hi Sandy! For some reason when I share files they only open on a computer. But if you open it on your profile on a computer and save it, you can open it on your iPad.

  2. I received this as a gift from my wonderful niece. My sister wants one now so your instructions and graphics are wonderful and am sharing . You have covered it all and made this easy for us “newbies” to follow. Thank you!

  3. I am confused..the post says 1/16 basswood but the link is for 1/8.. i ordered from the link but now I am not sure which is correct. Please let me know. Thank you so much!

  4. Hi. I have tried repeatedly to do this. My issue is that my blade isn’t cutting all the way through the 1/16 balsa wood. Any pointers before I try again?

    1. Hi Melissa! Are you using basswood or balsa wood? In your comment your said balsa. Are you selecting the correct setting for the type of wood you have? I used basswood and the basswood setting. If you are using balsa that would be a different option.
